Lieutenant Martin B. Smith

Martin Smith is a 1987 Graduate from Grand Valley State with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Lt. Smith has been an officer since 1986. After attending the Grand Valley State Police Academy, he worked for 18 years for the Oak Park Public Safety Department where he was crossed trained as a firefighter. While working in Oak Park, Lt. Smith was a Field Training Officer, Major Crimes Task Force Officer, and a Detective for 5 years. Upon his retirement in 2005, he was hired as a full-time police officer in Northfield Township. After being named the fulltime Investigator in the summer of 2008 he was promoted to Sergeant in 2010. In November of 2016 Lt. Smith was then named Interim Lieutenant assuming the role of Police Operations Supervisor. He then attended and graduated from Eastern Michigan University’s Staff and Command School in October of 2018. Lt. Smith believes in Community Policing and having officers in the community so residents can relate to them. He values his service and commitment to the protection of every resident in Northfield Township. He believes the support of the community is a direct reflection of the job his officers are doing and the leadership of his supervisors.
